Plaque can be compared to a gateway drug. It is the starting point to a lot of trouble for your teeth. If you don’t give it up, you may lose them. Terrible mouth problems like gum disease and advanced dental decay don’t just sneak up on you by surprise, they begin with plaque build-up that is ignored.

We recommend that all of our patients follow a consistent daily routine of oral care in order to eliminate plaque.

1.) Brush 2x Every Day

Studies confirm that the best thing you can do to control plaque is to brush your teeth in the morning after breakfast, and then again just prior to going to bed (and after eating dinner). Of course, there are other things (below) that help.

2.) Floss at Least 1x a Day

Flossing is the perfect companion to brushing to get at left-over particles of food and debris that your toothbrush cannot. Try a water flosser if you find you are inconsistent with traditional floss.

3.) Gargle With an Approved Mouthwash

The American Dental Association’s seal of approval can be found on mouthwash products. Check the label for that seal and rinse your mouth with one of these.

4.) Get a Professional Teeth Cleaning Every 6 Months

Last but not least, you should see your dentist twice a year for professional cleanings and so that he may give you a regular check-up for any other dental issues that should be given attention. Preventative care is key to catching potential issues before they develop into major problems.

If it has been over 6 months since your last professional teeth cleaning, come see Dr. Ryan H. Wilson. He will be happy to help you. Please contact Cedar Pointe Family Dentistry to make an appointment at: (505) 327.0044, or come by our office in Farmington, New Mexico.
